The universe is so large that it's pretty much impossible to grasp. Even if someone understand the numbers perfectly, the human mind just can't understand the vastness of the known universe. It may in fact be much larger, we just can't see light from that far away.

But here's another way to look at it. Even if space literally goes on forever, we still live on the scale that we're used to. In many regards, reality is perception. What I mean is that most of what affects us is here on Earth, barring an asteroid impact, an alien invasion (lol), or a sudden burst of radiation from somwhere. We more or less live in our little bubble whether the universe is trillions and trillions of light years in size or no larger than our own solar system. Yes, there's other factors that do affect us but it's mostly the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun that we basically depend on.

Wondering about what lies so far out there, there's enough chance for just about anything to exist... somewhere.

You know that song, "We Are All Made of Stars" by Moby? Well, it's not just a mish-mash of wishy-washy metaphysical drivel. We might be considered self-contained in our solar system in the short-term, but we literally are made of what was once stardust. One day, too far into the future to really have any impact on our species, we'll be that again. Just a fun note.

And Yohji, the universe probably *does* go on forever because if it doesn't, an 'end' would be something. Interesting thought: what if it's a big n-dimensional loop?

If we ever do get an alien invasion, lol (laughing out loud)

you could say we're at least dependent on the galactic center to maintain certain things.

Really? I was unaware of that. What do we depend on from the galactic center?
