I found this interesting not only because of the implied application but also because of the other applications that could arise: User Link In addition to using ceiling lights for Internet connectivity, a high-speed flashing spotlight could send one-way data broadcasts by illuminating the clouds in an area. Think of the Bat Signal but in binary code. Hmmm.... this could become a bizarre new form of broadcasting... will the FCC begin to regulate light pollution if this takes off?

You can get flashlights with a blink function on them for morse code. Using light flashes for morse code has been around forever.
I am beginning to grow skeptical of cynicism.

Yes; I've done this many times, especially when hiking at night. The new idea is to use high-speed binary code that is machine readable. Data of all sorts could be transferred over great distances as long as a clear line of sight is available between the two points.

One thing about it is that I don't see an advantage over regular, radio-based WiFi. It's likely I missed an important detail in the article, though. I'd imagine there would be problems with shadows, daylight, and the light sensor getting dirty / dusty, though.
