Thread RSS The Metaverse

You've probably heard at least rumblings about Facebook's plans to create something called the "Metaverse" and changing the company name to "Meta".

From what I've seen, it reminds me of a game / program called "Second Life" where people interact in a 3D environment as fantasy characters.

I think it's entirely possible that the interface for computers, phones, and Internet may transition to an augmented reality and virtual reality interface if the equipment is comfortable to wear and use as well as having sufficient battery life and processing power.

Is it a healthy future? I'm not sure. Could it be nice? In my opinion, there could be benefits.

Let's discuss!

Personally I think the metaverse is a non-starter. I don't see any advantages to moving social media to virtual reality.

"Augmented reality" is better since you wouldn't have to stare at your phone all day. Living inside the Matrix seems like a pathetic future.

It doesn't matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There's clearly enough room for more wine.
