After studying for a couple of months, a friend and I took our license exams and became licensed amateur radio operators.
It's a fascinating hobby. Although it isn't quite as popular as it was a few decades ago, ham radio is still very important for emergency communications.
Around here, there's a handful of repeaters that I've been able to use with my handheld transceiver fairly well. 73's, KD8FUD

Ditto on that, wish I had gottem my ham ticket years ago. Had plenty of friends in the hobby but never took the plunge myself.
Would be fun as long as there aren't too many dorkers like on CB "childrens' band", radio, heh. For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. -- Carl Sagan |

Speaking of, we've got some doofus in the neighborhood with a CB or a ham radio that's causing all sorts of interference to radio and TV locally.
