Because it's been a while since discussion of magical girls, time to bring up Maho Shojo Ririkaru Nanoha. Which is, as far as the magical girl genre goes, a decently-executed magical girl series directed by Akiyuki Shinbo.
The main character find a ferret-creature-thing named Yuno Scrya. Nanoha ends up with a magical wand and does the typical fighting monsters / looking for magical artifacts kind of quests.
The music from the series stands out and is fairly good, in my opinion. "Take a shot" in particular: user link on www.dailymotion.com

I'll have to check it out. Well, at least the music since I trust your taste in music.
"Take a shot" sounds like a really good track.

As far as magical girl anime go, my favorite is still CardCaptor Sakura.

I've seen the series. It's great.
It's a little formulaic but I've come to expect that.

Yeah, might be formulaic but it has its own twist to things.
