As a general rule, constructive criticism is encouraged. Please give as much detail as possible when critiquing art.

It's a good rule in general.
I don't make much art these days but maybe, maybe if I can find some old ones I still like, I'll put them in here. Waff-O!

Yeah, sometimes I can be a bad critic. If something looks weird to me, sometimes I don't know why and blurt out that it looks off without really figuring out why it does. Guess that can be confusing and frustrating for any artist who's honestly trying to improve and not just fishing for praise.
I'll keep in mind to be exact. "Dangerous toys are fun, but you could get hurt!" |

Or, I don't know, don't post your creations online if you aren't prepared to get peoples' honest opinions? Just a thought, guys. It doesn't matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There's clearly enough room for more wine. |

Honestly, even if you don't know why, saying something looks off is still useful, because it's always possible the artist didn't notice. And, well, sometimes it is the sort of thing where it'd probably take another artist to really pin down the why something looks off. But that doesn't mean any viewer wouldn't still see the problem. Just to qualify things, I'm not trying to get at "let's see you draw stuff, then you can judge art," more just at that someone who does is likely going to have a better idea of what specific issues there are.
Beyond that, I'm not likely to get too upset if people don't like my stuff and tell me. Because I did, in fact, put it out there. It's also why I often wonder about "art theft" on the internet, because it's the same sort of problem. If you put it online, you can't exactly stop people from using it, although it's still justifiable to be upset if they claim it as their own work.
But yeah, end of the day, if someone thinks some stuff is crap, they can say it's crap. Most people do appreciate some clue as to why, hence the preference of constructive criticism. |
