Jess got her nickname, "The Reaper" because of the coincidence that when people she knew would die (from an accident, illness, or a couple murders), she just happened to be the last person they spoke to or saw before they died.

Here's an idea:

Shell may have been privy to some insider knowledge regarding Jess's genetic tampering in the lab. Jess may be a designer baby in more ways than one.

The problem is that Shell's loyalty and shyness will keep her secrets, well, secret. Unless there's a good enough reason to spill the beans.
