This is really interesting. Being an avid shortwave listener, I've heard weird stuff like this on the radio before. I'll have to check it out in a spectrum (FFT) analyzer:
That is... if I can find a complete recording of it anywhere.

Yeah, I looked around everywhere I could but couldn't find a recording. They must not have released it to the public but just some exclusive deal with that show. Lame. Also, NASA is paid with tax dollars so that should be illegal. Don't find fault, find a remedy -- Henry Ford |

Helena, they definitely release everything as long as it's not a national security issue. They said on their blog that it was because the Internet wasn't around in the Apollo era that they didn't have a good way to release the recordings to the general public.
I will say that they dragged their feet but I wouldn't assume they were withholding the recordings for any other reason.
Now, the recording Nitro posted is very hard to understand. The transcript helps with what the astronauts say but I can't make out any radio noise they are referring to. For one thing, that constant buzz is way too loud and it's drowning out a lot of the other background noise.
I'm not sure where that TV production got the clearer recording of the radio noise. It might be that they created a simulation and the stuff in the video (if you follow through the links on phys.org) is not the actual thing the crew heard at the time. Yup, it's just really hard to find a lot of the time. Thanks for finding it and posting it! Don't find fault, find a remedy -- Henry Ford |
